Landlords may be liable for tenants unpaid water bills

The Government is considering changing the law so that Landlords become responsible for Tenant's unpaid water bills.

Under the Walker Review of Water Charging the Government is considering changing the law so that Landlords are liable for the payment of a Tenant's unpaid water bill. Unlike other utilities, the water companies cannot turn off people's water supply for unpaid supply, so they plan to use the Landlord as an unpaid debt collector - and guarantor! We strongly oppose this proposal and have started a petition on the 10 Downing Street website. We want to ask the Prime Minister to scrap these proposals and would like to encourage all landlords and agents to sign this petition which can be found at http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/tenantwaterdebt

Tenants and Pets

Renting with Pets - a Guide for Tenants

We understand that finding privately rented accommodation that allows pets can be very difficult. We know from experience that many pet owners are forced to live in unsuitable properties or keep their pets without consent from their landlord. In some extreme cases, owners are even having to give up their pets or face becoming homeless. Dog Trust has launched its Lets with Pets campaign to help make the house hunting process easier for tenants with pets. Below is a link for you to view or download a PDF brochure. The brochure contains tips and advice on how to pursuade landlords that you and your pets would make good tenants. It also contains information on moving with your pet and being a responsible pet owner. For further information on Dogs Trust's Lets with Pets campaign, please go to www.letswithpets.org.uk

Renting to Pet Owners

Accepting Pets - Is it Right for You?

Deciding whether or not to accept pets in your property can seem like a big decision, particularly if you have little experience of pets yourself. But it is something that you should carefully consider as almost half of the UK population currently owns a pet. Many landlords do not consider the financial benefits of allowing pets in their properties so we hope to show you that adopting a pet friendly policy can maximise your rental income. Dogs Trust have prepared a helpful and informative booklet for landlords which you can view or download following the PDF link below.
